It’s 1:04 am (Which is really 12:04 in my brain) and I can’t sleep.
I’m not a big ‘movie watcher’. I like stuff like CSI and Forensic Files. When I was kid though, movies were the shit. I grew up in a town where we had 3 television stations. PBS. ABC and if the weather was right CBS.
I remember the day my mom came home with a rented VCR. We must have sat around and watched everything they had in the very small video store in our town. When the prices of a VCR came down, we bought one and that started my love of anything that could be rewound and watched over and over.
My friend, Cori Pignataro, had 2 movies that she watched over and over at her house. I would have to say we saw those two movies at least a hundred times in the 4 years we spent our days together.
Poltergeist was her step-dad’s favorite movie. After school and he got off of work we had to watch his taped “General Hospital” and “Days of Our Lives”. After we were caught up on Luke and Laura, then Bo and Hope we would watch Poltergeist.
The other movie is my guilty pleasure movie. Cori’s dad never stuck around if we put it in to watch it with her older sister. Purple Rain. We knew EVERY.SINGLE.LINE of that movie.
Tonight, plum out of Forensic Files (by the way, I have seen EVERY episode of that show…and concluded, I might need to move the dead bodies of my ex-boyfriends to another location…my backyard just isn’t safe anymore.)
Purple Rain was on this channel I had never seen before. I decided, “What the hell. It will at least knock me out and I will fall asleep.”
No such luck. Damn movie sucked me in like I was 13 all over again. I wanted SO badly to stand up on the hope chest at the end of my bed and dance to Morris Day and The Time and It took everything I had not to belt out, “Baby I’m a Star!” at the end of the movie.
Okay, I have admitted my secret guilty pleasure movie. What’s yours?

Breakfast Club. I was so in love with Judd Nelson because my girlfriend and I used to fight over him, but secretly I always wanted the Nerdy Guy.
I used to watch it every Saturday Night because I was allowed to stay up later than my brothers. I havent seen it in a while and now you have made me want to watch it again.
Top Gun. Over and over and over…. My first really real date was to this movie. (You know… one where the boy could actually drive – our parents didn’t have to drop us off?) I was SO into that movie. And if it were on right now, I’d have to sit here and watch it. Even though her accent was unbelievably annoying in that movie, Meg Ryan was HOT!
What was I doing at a movie with a BOY? “It’s classified. I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.”
omg I don’t know why but when we were little we watched Poltergeist every day….. lol
The Pirate Movie. My brother and I watched that on a little portable tv in our car all the way from Maryland to Missouri. I know every line, every song, every winsome look on Kristy McNichol’s face.
ok I have two. One of which I have never admitted, to anyone. The Big Chill. I drive my family nuts watching it. The music reminds me of my childhood. My parents would play all the songs in the movie over and over. And, and. Valley Girl. ok I can’t believe I just admitted it lol. Ya can you guess when I grew? I loved me some bad boy Nick. ok now hit the submit button………… ugh.
just ONE!?!?
not a chance…
i CAN tell you that it’s either hard core action,.. or such a tear jerker that i can’t talk by the end… lol
The Princess Bride! I don’t usually like to watch movies over too much…but that movie, I will watch any day. The first time I saw it was at my grandma’s house, I think I was too young to sit still and watch the whole thing…but I remembered a few parts…like the R.O.U.S…then I saw it years later, and all the memories came flooding back…and I could appreciate the jokes. Now I can quote the movie right along with the actors. :o)
Dirty dancing when I was a little older, and Annie when I was young.
The old standby always has been and always be Grease.
Heathers. Because Christian Slater was so hot he made me weak in the knees. Several years AFTER the movie was made.
Untamed Heart.
The Outsiders. over and over and over and over.
I never get sick of it.
oh..
and Goonies.
Stacie
Poltergeist is my all time favorite movie. I first saw it at about three or four years old and have been hooked ever since. And I still won’t watch when the guy rips his face off.
I had a dream just last night that Prince was my drama coach in some class I was taking. Weirdness.
too many…
pump up the volume (i just bought this the other day…awesome!)
(don’t laugh) teen wolf
16 candles
I had so many but OMG…I can’t believe someone else listed The Pirate Movie on here! That was one of mine some others were, Top Gun, The Outsiders, Poltergeist, Incredible Shrinking Woman, and of course, Grease!
My fav movie is Ever After, i watch it over, and over and over. Food wise, i love avocado sushi. That is all i want. YUM!
Just about every cheesy 80s movie would be on my list, especially The Brat Pack movies, Purple Rain, and Last American Virgin. ;-)
OMG I love Purple Rain – I can’t choose just one guilty pleasure movie – there are soooooo many….soooo many…
Okay, reading through your list, I thought of another one I loved.
Earth Girls Are Easy.
LOVE that movie!!
Dirty Dancing or Ghost.
I f’ing love those movies.
The ones that that I know almost every line include:
Say Anything
A League of their Own
Bull Durham
And yes… almost every Harry Potter movie made!
The Fugitive…
The Usual Suspects…
Lost In Translation…
Dead Man…
The Big Lebowski
P.S. I’ve still never seen Top Gun and I am trying to keep it that way. I want to be the only American who dies a Top Gun virgin.
Grease, I still know every word, and movment to every song,
and Purple Rain.
Now itwould have to be Dangerous Beauty. LOVE that movie
Mean Girls, hands down.
Quit trying to make “fetch” happen, Gretchen.
I love that shit.
My sister and I would watch Grease every single Friday and Saturday until our brother got so sick of it that he took the tape and strung it all over the mailboxes in the neighborhood. It was a big black mess. We were heartbroken.
I know Labyrinth word for word, too.
I too lived in a TV vortex and we had 2 taped movies. Rodney Dangerfield’s Easy Money and Sixteen Candles.
My guilty admittance is that I have seen 16 Candles several hundred times and know every. single.line. I even had a crush on the geek, not the beau hunk!
I have lurked here forever. I love this site.
Urban Cowboy. Over and over. My secret was to marry John Travolta in my white cowboy boots and have TEXAS SISSY AND TEXAS BUD license plates in the back of my pick up truck window.
And Lonesome Dove.
And Mask. That would be Sam Elliott’s Mask not Jim whatshisname. Moustache Rides, YEEHAAA!
I’d have to say my guilty pleasure movie is “As Good As It Gets”. I could (and probably have) watched that a million times. That movie is about as close to a true romance as one can get without making me barf, and I often think about my life and wonder “what if this is as good as it gets?”.
Too funny that Sheryl is a Top Gun virgin–I bet I saw that one 16 times in the theater alone! But I understand how she feels, because I’m a Wizard of Oz virgin.
My current guilty pleasure is The American President. I have to watch it every time we happen to catch it on TV, and I know it word-for-word.
I can’t believe I didn’t say “Bring It On.” That movie is oozing wiht one-liners.
“Cheerleaders are dancers who have gone retarded.”
Ferris Bueller “LOVE” this movie
Overboard..might love even more
9 to 5
Anything Chevy Chase/Goldie Hawn
I think I am waaay older than most of you guys.
For me, anything with Humphrey Bogart in it, especially Casablanca. That’s what I like of the really old stuff.
More recently, Colin Firth movies. Bridget Jones’ Diary. His older British TV version of Pride and Prejudice.
Strangely enough, I’m also hooked on Harry Potter.
I’ll go back to my “grandma” rocking chair now.
16 Candles….then PURPLE RAIN ;o)
We all have those movies, don’t we?
Hmm, when we got our Beta Max (yes, I’m that old), it had Flashdance and I watched that a lot because, well, uh, it was the only movie we had.
When I was home on maternity leave with my oldest child, I watched Jurassic Park over and over and over.
While on maternity leave with my youngest, it was Lord of the Rings over and over. And, the deleted scenes, and the behind the scenes and the how we made the scenes. I had time and I wasn’t sleeping anyway.
Now, it is Harry Potter whenever I want something I can listen to or watch that is kid safe.
Oh yeah, Bull Durham and the Princess Bride in college … soon after college, it was Steel Magnolias (whenever I needed a good cry!)
There is nothing guilty about liking Purple Rain.
Better late than never …
Tank Girl …
French Kiss …
and Harry Potter
