Shaun and I have talked to a lot of people about how to have 5 kids and one income. Our friends and family encouraged us to do what we love and what we were good at.
We both worked when we first got together and it was fantastic. It was fantastic for Shaun and I, but when we got home the kids were out of control. Tyler was only 14 and he had to be in charge of 4 girls and by the time we got home he was almost in tears. We had to make a choice. I’ve been slowly going crazy at home since. The kids, they are happy.
We are getting our business license, our website is almost up and with a loan we bought another camera. Our ex’s agreed to help us out on the weekends we would be doing jobs by taking the kids for the day.
I already have a 4 weddings and a business that wants me to come shoot for them.
Yes, i’m scared as hell to do it, but I know we can do it. together.
Encouragement is always excepted so if you have some…please pass it on over…i’m overly grateful for any advice, words of wisdom or words of hope and love.
Something I need two of:
I need two switches. I need one for ON and one for OFF. I need to be able to calm down when I need to cope and I need to be able to turn myself on (giggle) when I need to be modivated to something.
I need more than one speed. I need ‘fast and slow’.
A couple reset buttons couldn’t hurt either.

I have a few suggestions. You create flyers (preferably with one of your photos) to post at local businesses, day care centers, other bulletin boards and supermarkets. Post ads in church and school newsletter. I have more suggestions (I am in marketing) so please feel free to ask anything.

I have a dummy panic button on my wall and I have copied it and the second one says DEF CON 6 which means that mamma is about to blow a gasket!

It is exciting to here that you are taking a chance and starting your own business! Just remember when things are feeling too overwhelming that it is absolutely worth it. You and Shaun take beautiful photographs – truthly an art – remember and focus on that. Don’t let the business take the passion and fun out of it for you – then you will be sucessful!

Husband worked 5 weddings as a photographer. Let’s just say that his pictures were beautiful, but our “giving instructions to people in order to get a great shot” skills needed quite a bit of extra effort. Tact and grace don’t come naturally to this millworker’s daughter.
I will say that when the church had a balcony and he put a second person (me) up there with a camera on a tripod so we could get an overview of the whole room during the lighting of the candles, those photos sold to every aunt and girlfriend and the minister’s wife.
Also, when my nephew got married, the photographer made photos available online, so I ordered directly for prints, rather than waiting for the busy bride and groom just back from their honeymoon to get around to us faraway relatives.
With great Regrets, I didn’t play SPF.
My mind is frazzled, with two Finals and a Research Project left to go. Graduation ceremony in a week, I can hang on until then–Honest…..

You shoot people to show how good they can look. I have always enjoyed that about your portraits. You will do a wonderful job. You have nothing at all to worry about… Besides, you ARE the master of the BAMF.

judging by the photos i have seen here, i would have to say you will do some amazing work professionally. you have fantastic perspective. i always end up looking at things differently after seeing them as you do through your viewfinder. like your switch photo–the angle & the focus & the way you interpreted it.

I own my own business as well (thanks for the adspace, I’m more than happy to put up a link for you on my site once your biz is up and running), and it can be frustrating and full of tears but it is sooooo rewarding. Just knowing that I never have to go work for someone else again and can always follow my own rules is so freeing. If you ever decide to come up to Vancouver for a vacation, I’d love to hire you to shoot some family photos for me. It makes your vacation a tax write off :)
I so wanted to play spf this week, I had some shots in mind, but I am so busy packing and moving I completely forgot. My twos were, things I have two of…kids, supergirl and cman, and something I wish I had two more of, was going to be a picture of me reflecting so it looked like there were 3 of me, because I really wish I was cloned right now, at least until we’re moved and unpacked, maybe after that I could go down to only one clone ;)
As for the #2, I hadn’t come up with anything yet.
The switch ~ very creative – and, ya I need that so much! With me it’s all or nothing!

I am very happy and very excited for you both! Starting our own business was the scariest, most exciting, most frustrating thing we’ve ever done…and we’d do it all over again in a heart beat. You’re going to be doing something that you obviously love, so that should make it better for you (NOT that I don’t love trophies, but COME ON! ;-)
