Random and Odd

He’s a organ donor from Hawaii

It’s been something I have been kicking around for 4 months, but didn’t know how to say it.  It has been three years since we got Halo from a shelter.  It was time to start looking for a friend for her.

I have been searching the shelters like a person searches for vacation packages after the income tax return check comes in.  To say I was tempted a few times by the adorable faces of puppies and pocket dogs, is an understatement.  I knew when I saw him, I had to have him.  In fact, the thought of calling the shelter and finding out he had been adopted already made me unable to sleep last night.  (Yes, I am running on zero sleep)

When Shaun and I got to the shelter, it didn’t take long to find him. He was in the very front.  Remember when being first in line was the coolest thing?  No so much for a dog at the pound. It simply means that your time is up.   When I talked to the lady at the front desk about him, she said he had been there since December 28th.  I said, “Not that long then.”  She looked at me like I was a loon.
“Uh, actually…that’s REALLY long.”  and then gave me that look that only people at the pound can give you because they know more than anyone else in the human race and have seen things that only we read about in text books.
To make sure I got the picture she raised her pierced purple eyebrow at me and gave me a look that said, “The dog should be named ‘dead'”  I got the picture. Put the eyebrow down lady.

Shaun and I kicked around a few names. Your typical dog names.  I liked Jack cause it looks like he has a patch over his eye and we could give him a cool name like “Captain Jack Ruler of the Backyard.”  Shaun liked “Panda”.  I pointed out that was a totally gay name and what was he, like 5?

After I took a big bite of chicken sandwich, Shaun looks at me and gives me a name that seemed to fit.

He’s kind of an angsty non social teenage boy.  Loves other dogs, but is awkward and clumsy around Halo. He tries to get her to chase him, but she is more interested in making sure he is where she wants him to be.  He plays the aloof card around her, but she’s so totally popular and it comes off looking more like he’s just a flute player in the school band.  It’s the first day, things can change.  She could decide he’s like the boy next door and is fun to play with when they aren’t in school.  Right now, she’s more interested in fashion and High School Musical.

Oh, McLovin, you have so much to learn.

I'm a lot of things, but mostly I'm just Random and Odd.

well for starters, we hope he isnt the Boy Next Door trying to play, because we all know she will become easily bored and be ready to kick him out, quicker then you can say shove off! LOL…He is cute, looks like a good fit. Whats Boo think?

  • Jamie

He is just beautiful! And makes me want a dog. We lost our dog on New Years day (she had a stroke we believe). But seeing McLovin gives me hope that maybe one day I’ll be able to allow my self to get another dog.

Please save one from the pound if you do decide to get one Jamie. There is something about saving a dog from the brink of death that makes you feel like a Super Hero!

  • Charlotte

That dog is SO FREAKING CUTE! I want one! I predict that he and Halo will be great friends. Of course, they’re now brother and sister, so there better not be any McLovin going on! Maybe he could just hook up with one of her friends during a sleepover…

I am so proud of you for doing this. It sounds silly I know, but I got MY border collie from someone who was about to take her to the pound simply because they didn’t want her anymore. We’ve had her for 3 years and she was a bit skiddish when we first got her but now, she’s so awesome. SHe is most definitely the smartest dog I’ve ever owned. I’ve heard border collie’s were really smart, but honestly, if she started talking to me I wouldn’t even be surprised. I can teach her to do anything in two tries. I swear she knows what I’m saying. Halo and McLovin look so cute together. I think they will be best friends before long. (I don’t have too many photos of my dog on my stream because she will never sit still but there are a couple of shots over there if you want to see her… She’s white with black spots.)

Thank you so much for adopting! I adopted my first dog when she was 11. She is now 15 and it was the best thing I have ever done. There are so many dogs in shelters and rescues that it just makes me sick to think about it. Thank you Thank you!!!! And Congratulations!!!

Kristine and Shaun you guys rock!!!!
You not only open your home to every person out there but you open it to four legged friends as well.

You worry about a lot of things Kristine, [money, etc] but you have something that so many people don’t have-and that’s compassion and a heart. You are so rich with love and family….

You are blessed and so is McLovin!!!

    Congrats to you all!

I was wrong guys. Not a flute player. He sings in the choir. This dog has a set of lungs. We are crate training him like we did Halo (who now just hangs out in her crate for fun) and he didn’t like it so much. He sang the whole fight song for the University of Hawaii Warriors. Over and Over again.

Love your blog, and I’m so jealous! I want a doggie in a bad way. I think it’s the only way I’ll get another girl to live in this house.

  • Mrs.Strizzay

We bought the Superbad DVD and in it came a McClovin license and my husband flashed the damn thing at the doctors as his ID and they didnt even say anything. All day long we giggled about McLovin, Margarets daddy.

  • Michelle

He is adorable. I love the name. What is it with all the cool bloggers getting dogs since Christmas. You, Heather Armstrong of http://www.dooce.com
and Confessions of a Pioneer Woman have both gotten dogs since Christmas too. What kind of dogs are McLovin and Halo – border collies?

Thank you for going the shelter route! Glad Halo has a friend and you have another dog with soulful eyes to melt your heart.

Michelle. I know of Dooce, but not the other one. I think she has a Australian shepherd. Hers is a puppy…I don’t have that sort of patience. She has mad training skills.

Halo is a Border Collie Australian shepherd mix. We got her in 2005 from a shelter so I don’t know her back story or how old she was. I was guessing she was over a year.

McLovin is Border Collie-something else mix. His snout is longer than Halos. I have NO idea how old he is.

After having a Border Collie for a few years, I knew there was no other dog I would want to have. I’ve been searching for just the right one for about 4 or 5 months. When I saw his picture, I had to have him. It just took me awhile to find him.

Oooh, I adore McLovin’!!! Great name AND he is very very cute. My dogs have dumb names: Ozzie and Lavy which is short for Lavendar (have I told you I HATE that name? I didnt change it when I was fostering her because “she wasnt staying”! HA! I should have changed it!) Ollie was the only super cool name. My foster dog is called Booker.

Good luck and let me know if you need help (remember that I am a dog trainer….)
